Mal,
Thank you for your input, it seems that between duty fees, shipping, insurance, and so on, he could buy a new EX3 instead of a used EX1. Unless he knows of someone here in NYC that will be going back to AU, it just doesn't pay.
In any event, this situation brought me back to this XDCAM site and that's good... I haven't been on in a while. Hope you are well and working... My best to all. Alan

Hi Alan
I think if you make enquiries with an international courier service, explain the situation with them, they should be able to handle the duties and payment for you - generally the person buying the camera should arrange this.
In any case don't hand anything over till you get payment or verified by the courier etc.
Hope it's of some help.
Mal

I live in NYC and wish to sell my slightly used EX1 to a cameraman in Sydney and wonder if anyone has information I could use to facilitate this? Pay Pal seems to be too expensive and direct deposit looks like the only option for payment but I wonder if there are any duty taxes or fees I have to account for in this sale. Should I go through UPS or go to an airline? Obviously I've never done this before and thought this would be a great place to get that kind of information. Many thanks to all.

Most interesting!

We had a number of issues with early PDW-530P due to the drive door being obscurred. However this was solved with a software update very early on.
The PDW-700 / F800 never had that issue.

The loader assy is identical between all PDW models, i.e. PDW510/530/F330/F335/F350/F355/700&F800 cameras - there are no major changes just some minor updates, but all units are interchangeable.
Also the main Drive assy is the same BRD-P10 from F330 up to the F800. The SD models PDW-510 & 530 used the older BRD-P1 drive.

Therefore I do not understand why the PDW-700 would be more susceptible to loader issues compared to any of the other models.

We have approx 32 units of PDW-700/F800 working very reliably here in New Zealand.

As mentioned, yes we did have an issue in the early days of the PDW-530P and have had just a few issues since (but we have well over 100x PDW-530s in our small market).

Clive

Sync problems TC and external sound

Hello.

I am working on a tv-series where we use the HDW 700 camera (1080 25P) and some Aaton device for sound recording.

We use TC (not genlock)and a clapper for syncing. We edit in FCP. The picture and the sound are not perfectly synced when the material is imported. The logger have to sync every clip on the clapper.
The unsync is not constant, but varies from 1 - 3 frames. I guess that 1 frame is constant out of sync due to the high resolution picture that needs more sampling-time than the sound.
I guess we can correct this with a default delay (1 frame) of the sound in the entire timeline, but the real problem is that the delay in the picture varies.

Does anyone have an idea to solve this problem?

The DoP dont want to use genlock.

FOR ALL XDCAM 700 AND HIGHER OWNERS PLEASE READ THIS MAY SAVE YOU DOLLARS.

Just a warning to all owners of a XDCAM 700 and maybe other new models. Something that sony will not tell you. I work for a production company that has had a new XDCAM 700 for about 4 months. In that time they have had 2 YES 2 loading drives fail. In other words the disc would not eject. First time could no do a manuel eject the camera had to be opened up. Second time I was not there so not sure how they got the disc out.

Now good old Sony said that ohh the camera must have had some rough treatment. Well I am the main user and that comment is just utter rubbish. In fact the second time the loading drive failed I was using the camera. The shoot was a interview for about 2 hours and the camera was on a total lock off not even a reframe. After the shoot I ejected the disc and gave it to the editor. I put the disc back in about 30 mins later to see how much time was left on it. Then went to eject it and heard some not so normal sounds..and disc would not eject.

Now the second loading drive has been replaced Sony has said that there should not be any problems..YEAH right. So what you should do if you have a 700 or higher. The production company has asked Sony to replace the camera or a life time replacement warranty on the loading drive. I wonder what Sony would have done if the camera was out of warranty. I think the production company would have paid BIG Sony $$$$. The interesting thing is that the production company owns the first XDCAM that come out. Never had a problem and that camera saw a lot of work.

WHAT YOU SHOULD DO

I would contact your sony dealer and make it known to them that you know that there has been problems with the loading drive. I would ask for a lifetime replacement warranty on that part and do all of the above in writing not by phone.

Hope this helps you owners out here. Please copy this and send this to any other owners you know or even production companies you may work for.

cheers
Saaust

Can sometimes be due to a short duration clip (under 3 seconds) but not heard of this one.
See Sony, they might be able to recover.
